Wildlife

Tarangire National Park is home to a wide array of wildlife, making it a must-visit destination for any animal lover. The park is especially famous for its large elephant herds, often seen cooling off in the river or spraying themselves with mud. Other iconic animals to spot include lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and African buffalo. With its lush vegetation and permanent water sources, Tarangire is an ideal habitat for these magnificent creatures, ensuring exceptional game viewing opportunities throughout the year.

Birds

For avid birdwatchers, Tarangire National Park is a paradise. More than 500 bird species have been recorded here, making it one of the best birding destinations in East Africa. From the majestic Kori bustard to the vibrant yellow-collared lovebirds, the park is a haven for a wide variety of bird species. For a truly exceptional experience, visiting during the wet season, between November and March, is recommended, as this is when migrant bird species flock to the park in great numbers.

Best Time To Visit:

While Tarangire National Park can be visited year-round, the dry season (June to October) is often considered the best time to visit. During this period, the vegetation thins out, and wildlife congregates around the river, making for excellent game viewing opportunities. Moreover, the lack of rainfall ensures easy access to the park’s various attractions.

Weather & Climate

Tarangire National Park experiences a semi-arid climate. The dry season boasts warm days and cool nights, with temperatures ranging between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). The wet season, from November to May, sees sporadic rain showers, resulting in lush greenery and a more vibrant atmosphere.

Getting There

Tarangire National Park is easily accessible from Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s northern circuit. The park can be reached by a scenic drive of approximately 2-3 hours. Alternatively, domestic flights to the park’s airstrip are available, providing a convenient option for those with limited time.
